Citation

Captain Nagulapalli Narsing Rao was the regimental medical officer with a battalion of Grenadiers during the operations against Pakistan in the Western Sector. On 10 December 1971, the battalion launched an attack and captured an enemy stronghold, which was protected by an 800-yard deep minefield. The assaulting troops therefore suffered heavy casualties. Undeterred by heavy enemy shelling, Captain Rao moved to the objective to provide medical aid to the wounded. He went from one casualty to another attending to their wounds. Even during the enemy counter-attack he continued with his task without any regard for his safety till all the casualties had been attended to and their evacuation arranged.

Throughout this action, Captain Rao displayed gallantry, determination and devotion to duty of a high order.
