Awardee: Ram Saran Dass VrC
Citation
During the last week of October 1947, the tribal raiders disrupted the state forces and on one occasion managed to infiltrate near Uri. After infiltrating there, the enemy cut the advance guard from the main body of our troops. More enemy troops were seen outflanking. Subedar Ram Saran Dass, who was commanding two detachments of 3 in. mortar and was supporting the advance guard, immediately sited the mortars and fired, causing heavy casualties to the enemy.
When our troops were being overrun at Rampur, he again gave effective support and saved the situation. He was badly wounded in the chest but refused to be evacuated and persisted in fighting on. The courage and inspiring leadership shown by this JCO, with complete disregard for his personal safety, were exemplary.
