On 15 October 1948, Sepoy Ram Singh was out with his platoon on a diversionary task during the main operation against Pir Badesar. Enemy under heavy 3-in. mortar preparation attacked the platoon, which had to fall back in the face of overwhelming odds. Four bayonet charges of the enemy were thrown back with heavy losses. Sepoy Ram Singh, No. 1 of his LMG, was responsible for smashing the enemy bayonet charges.

When the platoon was being outflanked, Sepoy Ram Singh offered to stay back and cover its withdrawal. The enemy again charged. Though shot in the face, Sepoy Ram Singh kept up effective fire and broke the enemy assault. He was later picked up unconscious, having saved his platoon and broken the enemy will to close in.

The selfless act of bravery of Sepoy Ram Singh was instrumental in saving his platoon from disaster.
