Vir Chakra (VrC)
Awardee: Rajinder Singh VrC
Citation
Naik Rajinder Singh was commanding a medium machine gun detachment grouped with a company of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles. This company was ordered to take up a defensive position in an area in the Eastern Sector. The enemy attacked with a battalion under cover of heavy artillery fire. Firing accurately with the medium machine gun, Naik Rajinder Singh helped stall the enemy assault. In the intense shelling by the enemy, the spare part wallet of his medium machine gun was damaged and the firing pin of his machine gun broke. With utter disregard for his personal safety, he rushed out of his bunker, exposing himself to enemy fire and shelling, and returned with a firing pin from another detachment. While changing the pin, he burnt his hands badly Still he brought his gun into action when the enemy had closed in as near as fifty metres from our defences. The intensity of Naik Rajinder Singh's medium machine gun fire contributed largely to the breaking up of the enemy's assault in its final stage. Throughout, Naik Rajinder Singh displayed commendable courage, initiative and determination.
