Awardee: Raghunath Singh VrC
Citation
On the night of 14 October 1948, when a column was advancing towards Pir Badesar, the enemy who had taken up position near Giran, opened fire on the vanguard of the column. Owing to the effectiveness of fire, the column was held up and it was decided to put in a dawn attack on the enemy. Sub Raghunath Singh's platoon was leading. During the attack, this JCO was hit which caused sudden slowdown in the advance.
He got up and ordered his men to keep going without caring for him. He had hardly taken two or three steps when he fell down but refused to be carried back unless the platoon had captured its objective. -His inspiring words instilled a new spirit in the men and the objective was captured. His injuries proved fatal and he died on 24 October.
His complete disregard of personal safety and devotion to duty when even mortally wounded were a source of inspiration to all ranks.
