Citation

Sepoy M.N.S.K Pillai was signalman with a forward company of4 Madras. On 10 November 1948, the company was ordered to capture a vital feature. The company was pinned down about 600 yards from its objective by heavy and accurate mortar fire coupled with MMG and LMG fire. The artillery OP set went out of order and all communication was made through Sepoy Pillai's set. He had to expose himself several times to maintain communication.

An enemy sniper, detecting activity near Sepoy Pillar's set, fired a shot which passed through his steel helmet but he carried on maintaining communication. He was a great help to his company in achieving its objective successfully and in keeping down casualties. His devotion to duty and perfect coolness under heavy exacting circumstances set an example of the highest order.
