Citation
Havildar Piara Singh was platoon havildar of the leading platoon of a battalion of Sikh Light Infantry advancing in an area in the Rajashtan Sector. On 8 December 1971, the enemy counter-attacked this platoon in force. Deploying one of its sections to give fire support, the platoon charged the assaulting enemy.
The light machine gunner in the supporting section of his platoon was hit and rendered ineffective. Havildar Piara Singh rushed to this machine gun and started firing it. He was hit in his right shoulder from a light machine gun burst, but unmindful of his severe injury he stuck to his post providing effective fire support. Thus the enemy counter attack was repulsed.
In this action, Havildar Piara Singh displayed commendable courage, initiative and leadership.
