Captain Diwakar Anant Paranjape was commanding a company which occupied the forward-most position of a battalion defended area in the Jammu-Sialkot Sector. On 22 September 1965, the enemy launched an attack supported by armour and artillery fire and took a heavy toll of Captain Paranjape's men. One of his platoon localities was also overrun. Reorganising the remnants of his platoon, Captain Paranjape made a bold and determined counter-attack, threw the enemy out and recaptured the lost positions.

In this action, Captain Paranjape displayed exemplary courage, initiative and resourcefulness.
