Citation
On 20 October 1962, the Chinese attacked bridge 4 position in NEFA and, over running a company of our forces advanced on the battalion headquarters from all sides. Major Gurdial Singh, who was second in command, rushed out of the battalion headquarters bunker, rallied the survivors and personally led a charge on the advancing enemy He inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy and thus gained time for some of the survivors to be extricated from an untenable position. Major Gurdial Singh's courage and devotion to duty in the face of the enemy were in the best traditions of our Army.
