Vir Chakra (VrC)

Havildar Nirmal Singh was Section Commander in a Company of4 Mahar and was deployed in Sri Lanka as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force. When the momentum of the attack launched by his company was checked, due to heavy and accurate machine gun fire of militants, this brave Non-Commissioned Officer, unmindful of impending danger, crawled through a hail of bullets and destroyed a medium machine gun bunker. His daredevil act helped the Company to resume the offensive and finally capture Kopai North.

Again on 19 October 1987, during the capture of the militants' explosive factory, he led his section with great courage and neared his assigned objective, but in the process, was fatally wounded.

Havildar Nirmal Singh displayed exemplary courage and died for his country
