Vir Chakra (VrC)

Havildar Nirmal Singh was in command of a platoon of a battalion of Jammu and Kashmir Rifles in the Rajasthan Sector. During the reorganisation of the objective, the platoon came under heavy enemy shelling, but Havildar Nirmal Singh, with utter disregard for his safety, moved from one section to the other to ensure speedy reorganisation. When our tanks were moving up to the objective an enemy recoilless gun suddenly opened up and one of the tanks was hit. The move of the other tanks was temporarily held up. Havildar Nirmal Singh, realising the importance of silencing the enemy gun, took one of his sections and assaulted the gun from a flank. Though wounded in the process, he pressed home the attack, destroyed the enemy position and captured the gun.

Havildar Nirmal Singh displayed gallantry and devotion to duty of a high order.
