Citation

Rifleman Moti Kumar Newer was No. 1 of a light machine gun detachment of a battalion of Gorkha Rifles. His battalion was ordered to capture a well-fortified and strongly held post in the Eastern Sector. During the assault, our troops came under effective small arms and artillery fire.

Rifleman Newar was seriously wounded in the thigh by a shell splinter but he kept firing his light machine gun from his hip and pressed on with the attack. When the assaulting troops closed in with the enemy defences, they were held up by an enemy heavy machine gun firing from a bunker and inflicting heavy casualties on the troops.

Rifleman Newar, realising the importance of silencing this gun, discarded his light machine gun and taking two grenades charged the machine gun post single-handed. He was seriously wounded by a machine gun burst but managed to lob a grenade through the loophole and silenced the gun before succumbing to his wounds.

In this action, Rifleman Newar displayed gallantry and determination of a high order.
