Citation

Subedar lshan Singh Negi was commanding the leading platoon during an attack on a feature in J&K on 10 April 1948. While assaulting the position, No. 1 Bren gunner of the nearest section was wounded and Sub K. S. Negi himself picked up the Bren gun and charged the enemy firing the gun from the hip, thereby inflicting at least five casualties on the enemy. Half way up the feature, the platoon was held up by the enemy who were reinforced in strength and were firing automatics and throwing grenades. Subedar Kishan Singh, regardless of his personal safety, went from section to section to keep up the morale of his men. When the company was reorganised, he led his platoon successfully on to the position. During consolidation, while his platoon was under heavy enemy fire, he personally carried two wounded back to safety.

Throughout the action Subedar Negi's cool courage and leadership set an outstanding example to his men.
